Just because your patio space is on the smaller side doesn't mean that you can't turn it into a luxurious outdoor oasis.

Here, we've spoken with interior designers who share some of their top tips for making a patio into an elegant-looking spot for relaxing and entertaining. Follow their lead and then get ready to host all of the al fresco get-togethers for the coming months.

Invest in Well Made Furnishings

Make sure to be mindful about purchasing patio furniture that is built to stand the test of time and will maintain a sophisticated appearance despite regular use.

"Industrious materials like metal, treated wood, or composite hold up to the elements, and it's worth it to invest in durability for outdoor furnishings," Elissa Hall, the founder of EDH Interiors, says. "For soft seating, go with a sunbrella-type fabric that is thick and water resistant."

Be sure that you have enough outdoor seating on hand to accommodate guests. If you're short on space, you will want to opt for multifunctional pieces. Patrice Justice, the founder of Patricia Justice Designs, loves outdoor ottomans since they can easily be moved around for additional seating or resting your feet.

"Lightweight chairs that stack can come in handy for when you have larger groups," she adds. "That way, they don't eat up too much storage space," Justice says.

Draw From Nature

Infuse your outdoor space with natural elements such as a stone, which Laurie DiGiacomo, the founder of Laurie DiGiacomo Interiors, suggests using it for flooring, while also incorporating some sort of water feature. Whether it's a fountain or a small pond, it will instantly add some sense of tranquility and elegance, DiGiacomo says.

Don't forget to bring greenery out onto the patio, too, Becky Carbone, the founder of Becky Carbone Interiors, says. If you have an empty wall consider adding a plant stand to bring some visual interest or a pop of color, Carbone says.

"Hit up your local nursery for small plants and get some simple terracotta or neutral pots," Carbone recommends.

Add Visual Interest With Accessories

To ensure that your patio doesn't fall flat, pay special attention to the accessories you weave into space. For example, Hall suggests opting for a peppy striped umbrella and decorating the patio with string lights or solar lanterns.

Don't forget about textural touches, too. DiGiacomo likes to add texture and color to an outdoor space by bringing in high-end outdoor rugs, throw pillows, and blankets. Justice recommends dressing up glider-type swings with faux fur throw pillows. The best part? You just have to bring the materials inside after guests leave, Justice says.

Create small vignettes to add further personality to your space. Gina Sims, the founder of Gina Sims Designs, suggests adding a tray with a plant or candle on a coffee table to create a cozy statement.

Of course, be mindful that all of the individual pieces you select for your patio play off of each other.

"Ensure all elements are well-coordinated in terms of color, style, and theme," DiGiacomo says.

Don't Be Afraid to Go Bold

Have fun when decorating your patio and don't be afraid to weave in some bold colors or prints, Taylor Fusco, the founder of Tay Fusco Design, says.

"Make the furniture you're using an art piece," she says, noting that she loves to incorporate statement performance fabric on outdoor sofas.

Be Thoughtful About Your Lighting

The right outdoor lighting will work wonders in making your patio appear more luxe. Think a bit outside the box when choosing lighting for your space.

"I like to scatter outdoor candles throughout plant stands, in window sills, and on the floor next to furniture to create a warm and magical ambiance," Madelaine Mayer, the founder of AD:ROIT, says.

Jazz Up Your Floor

Just because your patio is small doesn't mean that you can disregard the floor. Mayer recommends bringing in an outdoor rug to create a luxe feel under bare feet when you kick off your sandals. She personally loves Ruggable for UV-stable outdoor rugs.

"They feel great and can really elevate your outdoor space," Mayer says.
